Do you eat, sleep and dream music? Do you want to take advantage of every possible opportunity to study it? Are you looking for ways to help fund those studies?
Here are a few scholarships available to young musicians in Nova Scotia:
Open to any student attending grade 12 or under in NS and to be used to defray costs of any summer music camp. Additional $200 award: Fran Tyrell Memorial Summer Study Bursary for leadership in music.
Deadline: July 1. Two scholarships are typically available; one for a young musician or dancer age 18 or under and second to a young adult age 19-29. An interest in traditional or early music is recommended.
The Edward J. Ward Irish Music Scholarship ($1000 USD)
Deadline: June 30. For musicians or singers and to be used for the study of Irish instrumental or vocal music. Applicants may be of any age.
Music award available to students resident in Nova Scotia under the age of 22 who function with a physical disability. Award may be used to cover costs associated with musical development.
Emphasis is on students preparing seriously for a professional career, but students in elementary or junior high school can apply if they are taking programs outside their regular school instruction (summer camps or private study).
Two awards open to members of the Army Cadets; one for a pipe band musician and one for a military band musician.
Open to students in grades 4-12 who live in Lunenburg County, NS, the scholarship is to be used to study with a teacher of traditional/folk music in Lunenburg County. Three scholarships of up to $300 are available. Deadline is June 30 for lessons starting the following September, with the expectation that winners will perform in the Young Folks Concert in the Folk Harbour Festival the following March.
The fund provides for a $500 cash prize to be awarded annually to a graduating high school student who has been accepted for further musical study at a recognized post-secondary institution and whose band director or private music instructor is a member in good standing of The Nova Scotia Band Association.
The Sackville Concert Band Society will present up to four $250 bursaries to students demonstrating the desire and potential to succeed within the genre of traditional concert band music. The “Keep the Music Alive” Bursary may be used to support activities such as (but not limited to):
- Instrument rental or purchase for students acquiring a better instrument in order to reach their musical potential
- Financial assistance for Grade 12 students heading to university to attend an instrumental music program
- Assistance for students to attend advanced study sessions, seminars and workshops with professional musicians
- Assistance for students attending advanced band programs or camps
- Other band-related musical initiatives.

Government of NS: Award for Excellence in Performing Arts ($1000) & Charlie A'Court Scholarship for Excellence in Music ($500 & mentorship with Charlie A'Court)
These two awards have been posted for 2018; check back to see if it is offered again for 2019.
Open to Grade 12 students graduating from a public NS high school who have applied or been accepted to an arts-related post-secondary program.
