GRADE 12 CREDIT FOR FLUTE EXAMS!

Students who complete the Grade 8 Practical flute exam and the Grade 2 Rudiments theory exam through the Royal Conservatory of Music may be eligible for a Grade 12 secondary school credit. Talk to your guidance counsellor!


MISSING SCHOOL FOR PRIVATE LESSONS

The Government of Ontario has passed legislature which states that students are allowed to miss up to one half-day of school per week to attend music lessons.

From the Ontario Provincial Legislation website (Education Act):

"When attendance is excused
(2)  A person is excused from attendance at school if,
...
(e) the person is absent from school for the purpose of receiving instruction in music and the period of absence does not exceed one-half day in any week..."

WHY TAKE EXAMS?

Students take exams for many reasons.  Some need the external motivation of having specific deadlines and something concrete to prepare for.  Others like to have their progress recognized by an external organization, and completing the exams gives them a feeling of accomplishment.


DO I HAVE TO TAKE EXAMS?

Absolutely not.  If you would like to prepare for exams, we'll be happy to help.  This is a personal choice, however, and you are not required to do exams to be in the Studio.


THEORY EXAMS

Students are welcome to study for written theory exams.  Theory exams are offered through the Royal Conservatory of Music during January (application deadline: November), June (application deadline: March) and August (application deadline: June).  Fees for the exams depend upon the grade level being written.  Visit the RCM website for current information.


PRACTICAL EXAMS

Students are welcome to prepare for RCM practical exams.  Examinations can be expensive, so it is recommended that only students who are willing to work hard for the full year choose this option. Information on fees, examination centres and the examination process may be found on the RCM website.
