about us

Amy O'Neill graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Western Ontario. She has over 17 years of experience as a private instructor and currently teaches at the University of Western Ontario. She is active as a freelance flutist / piccolo player, and is the Irish flute player for the band 'eolas'.

Amy O'Neill offers Classical flute, Irish flute and theory lessons through the O'Neill Flute Studio, teaches at the University of Western Ontario and often appears as a clinician with schools and community music groups.  Her goal is to create in each student a love of music which stays with him / her for life.

Lessons are taught in an informal, exciting atmosphere, with emphasis on the enjoyment of learning. Dedicated students from beginner to University Prep level are welcome.

student age

Students of all ages are welcome.

Younger students (early elementary school and other petite students) may be more comfortable starting on the Yamaha fife or a flute built to fit small players.

Examples of these instruments may be found here:

Jupiter assisted fingering model flutes with a curved headjoint (for tiny students)
Di Zhao 'Mini-Di" flute with a curved headjoint (for tiny students)
Trevor James flute with a curved headjoint (for petite middle-school students)

Lessons may be scheduled weekday afternoons or evenings at the time most convenient for both the teacher and student.

Lessons are offered in the following lengths:
15-20 minutes (young children in grades 1 through 3)
30 minutes (beginners in grades 4 through 6; technique lessons)
45 minutes (students in grades 7 through 12; adult amateurs)
60 minutes (students preparing for auditions or exams at or above RCM VI)

instruments & music studied

Students are able to follow a course of study in either Irish or Classical flute.
Students wishing to study traditional Irish music may use either an Irish flute or a Boehm-system (regular "silver") flute.

Should other genres be of interest to the student (e.g. other traditional, folk, sacred or popular music) these preferences will be taken into consideration when assigning music for study.

materials

Students will need a flute in good working order. Instruments may be rented locally from Belle Air Music or purchased from many of the local music stores.
Instruments can sometimes be purchased from other students as they look to upgrade.

If you have an instrument that needs some work before it can be played, the instrument techs at Music Aid should be able to help.

Students should have a music stand for at-home practise.

Sheet music can be purchased from any music store, such as Belle Air Music or Walter's Music.
