practise time

While every student requires a different amount of practise time to achieve his/her goals, the following is a list of recommended practice session lengths.

Beginners (RCM I-IV): 15-30 minutes per day, or as long as it takes to get things right.
Intermediate I (RCM VI): 45-60 minutes per day, or as long as it takes to get things right.
Intermediate II (RCM VIII-IX): 60-90 minutes per day, or as long as it takes to get things right.
Advanced (RCM X-ARCT): As long as it takes.

how to practise

Practising is different from playing through.  Practising involves the following steps:

1. Identify the problems in the technique, study or piece.

:: where are the "blips"? are you having trouble with sound? expression? rhythm?

2. Isolate the problem.

:: take the problem passage out of the piece and work on JUST that section.

3. Integrate the solution.

:: when the problem has been fixed, put it back into the piece/study/technical passage.

Your session should involve a minimum of 90% practise (dealing specifically with problems) and a maximum of 10% playing through.

what to practise

A typical breakdown of an effective 60-minute practise session might be:

15 minutes TONE

  7 minutes TECHNIQUE

  7 minutes STUDIES

15 minutes REPERTOIRE

10 minutes ORCHESTRAL EXCERPTS or ADDITIONAL REPERTOIRE

  6 minutes PLAYING FOR FUN

If you find you are having a more difficult time with one area than another, you can redistribute time as necessary.
