The O'Neill Flute Studio is located in central London, Ontario, Canada.
Students of all ages are welcome, but should be old enough that they can comfortably hold the instrument. Younger students may be more comfortable starting on the Yamaha fife or an instrument built to fit small players, such as Jupiter's Prodigy flute.
Many adults have very busy schedules, but would like to try lessons without committing to a full term. With this in mind, the Studio offers a 10-week introductory course with 45-minute lessons for beginners and 60-minute lessons for more advanced players.
Lesson gift certificates are available! You can choose from 30-, 45- and 60-minute lessons in blocks of one to four months. If you are interested in an option not listed here, please ask!
Students will need a flute in good working order. Instruments may be rented locally from Belle Air Music or purchased from many of the music stores in town. Instruments can sometimes be purchased from other students as they look to upgrade.
If you have an instrument that needs some work before it can be played, the instrument techs at Music Aid should be able to help.
Students should have a music stand for at-home practise.
Sheet music can be purchased from any music store, such as Belle Air Music or Walter's Music.
Please call the studio at (519) 872-6269 or e-mail to set up a lesson time.
Lessons may be scheduled weekday evenings at the time most convenient for both the teacher and student.
The purpose of the first lesson is to determine the student's current level, goals and interests. The student should come prepared to play a piece or study at his/her current comfort level. Beginners should bring their instrument and have considered what genre of music appeals to them most.
Lessons are paced to fit each student's age, ability and interests. No two students follow exactly the same course of study - the direction your lessons will take will depend largely on what areas of music you would like to explore. Some students choose to prepare for RCM exams, some for university auditions and some come completely for fun, while their goals range from being able to play with the church choir to becoming an international soloist. Current students are exploring everything from the standard Classical (Art) music repertoire to Irish traditional music. Theory, history, learning by ear and ensemble playing are just a few of the other areas available for study.
New students of any level are always welcome, and the co-operative, supportive atmosphere of the studio helps to make even the most nervous beginner feel at ease.
